Dear Dr. Sharon,
I am a 36 year old female that has been going back and forth to the doctor for over 1 year with the same symptoms. I feel very tired all of the time, I had some hair loss, sores in my mouth and low blood counts. My first doctor told me that I was anemic (low blood) and that I needed to take iron tablets. When the tiredness did not get better and my knees started to hurt, he told me to lose weight and suggested that I see a psychologist. I eventually went for a second opinion and after talking to the new doctor and taking several blood tests—I have been diagnosed with Lupus. I have read some things about Lupus but I am very afraid because I cannot be “cured” of it and will have to live with this the rest of my life. I have been on steroids and have gained about 8 pounds in the last 2 weeks but am beginning to feel better. Can you tell me how I got this, what is going to happen to me and should my children be tested for this disease?

|HELP, My Daughter wants a Tattoo and Her Tongue Pierced?||11:42 AM, Dec 11 2007|
Dear Dr. Sharon,
I am a mother of 3 and my daughter is a 16 year old that is creating havoc in my household. She is an honor roll student, is not boy crazy or had problems with drinking or drugs and I’m very proud of her most of the time. However, my daughter wants to get a tattoo and a tongue ring and this has become a war between us. I have researched tattoos and body piercings because of her. However, I don’t want to be a hypocrite, for my fortieth birthday I got a tattoo in an area that is not readily seen. I am not a prude but I do not want my daughter making major decisions about tattoos and tongue piercing while still a teen, she can do whatever when she is a grown woman. What do you think, is there a health risk associated? What about our relationship and am I just making her want to get the tattoo and piercing more?

Dear Dr. Sharon,
I am a 56 year old Black woman. I read your column in Gospel Today every month and it has helped me refocus on my health. I have been doing well with following my doctor’s instructions for my high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol for the last 5 months. I have begun to walk at least three times a week and feel good about my progress. Although I have a long way to go, I have lost 14 pounds since making the healthy life changes. My children are 17 and 15, they needed to make some health changes as well as they are both overweight, they have lost a few pounds with me.
My concerns are for the upcoming months, how do I keep my healthy changes through the holidays? My family comes in from out of town and everyone comes to my house, we do Thanksgiving and Christmas BIG and I am usually the one that does most of the cooking and therefore a lot of eating/tasting. I know that I have done well but I am afraid of “falling off the wagon” during the holidays. Do you have any suggestions or help; I don’t want to go backwards.
|What Can I Expect from Sarcoidosis?||11:43 AM, Dec 11 2007|
Dear Dr. Sharon,
I am a 48 year old woman that has lived with Sarcoidosis for the last two years. I met you recently at a conference and I asked about the disease, thank you for your kindness and ability to break this down for me. Although my doctor has talked to me about it, I’m still very afraid of the possible long term effects of the disease and what the medications may be doing to me. I am ok now but have times where I can’t breathe well and have a lot of joint pain. I believe that not enough people know about Sarcoidosis, can you please share more information and tell me what I can expect. Thank you so much and you are a DYNAMIC speaker—we LOVED YOU!
